5 Things to Avoid if You Want to Be Successful as a Real Estate Agent

Many dream of a lucrative career in real estate, but few understand the amount of work that goes into becoming a top producer in this challenging industry. Real estate is certainly not for the faint of heart or for those who are lazy, despite what many people outside the industry might think. However, it is true that this industry can change your life and help you generate substantial wealth without the typical “9 to 5” constraints.

The major difference between you as an agent and someone with a traditional job is that you are essentially a business within a business, sharing in both the risk and reward. The only person who can set your limitations in this industry is you.

To be successful, you need grit, dedication to mastering your craft, and an insurmountable level of discipline at that!

Here are five things to avoid at all costs if you wish to be successful:

5. Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail

Like any other business, without a plan, you are sure to fail. Many agents wake up each morning with no plan, hoping that opportunities will simply fall into their lap. Planning your day, week, month, and year is the first and most important step. Miss this step and be prepared for a road filled with lots of pain and rice crackers where steaks should be.

4. Check Your Attitude at the Door

Just as this is true for your social life, it is doubly true as a real estate agent. Nobody wants to hang around with people who moan, whine, and constantly complain—except others who like to do the same. Winners don’t have time to waste, and clients don’t have the energy to give. Before you walk through the door of your office or your client’s home, make sure you have a smile on your face. If you have nothing good to say, keep it to yourself, especially when it comes to your competition. You can always cry or punch a pillow when you get home.

3. Be Lazy When You Are Dead

Clients will not be throwing themselves at your feet, so let’s get that out of our heads. Real estate is the grind that never ends. It requires long hours and lots of paperwork. There are a million moving pieces you need to figure out simultaneously. If you spend your time doom scrolling, staying up past your bedtime, and waking up late, expect to be munching on those rice crackers for the foreseeable future.

Activities the dreaded admin are two areas that will always require your attention and help to drive your business.

2. Social Media Is Not a Silver Bullet

Too many agents rely too heavily on social media. If you think buyers and sellers will flock to you because of your “Motivation Monday” post or because you show them every meal you consume in 4k detail, think again. You are not selling paper clips but rather a product that represents a person’s lifelong achievements. If they do not know you, like you, or trust you, you have zero chance of convincing them to use your services based on a clever post. To succeed, you must get in front of people and build relationships, so think of social media as an “and”, not an “or”, and make sure that you are people facing as often as possible.

1. You Cannot Be Everything to Everyone

Choosing the wrong clients will strip away your will to live, leave you broke, and tarnish your reputation. All too often, agents grab the first listing they can, which are often overpriced and overrepresented with poor commission terms. Be selective about who you take on as a client. This may result in slow progress early in your career, but it will benefit you later when you have a client base that respects your commission and allows you the latitude to complete successful transactions.

No matter how much this industry changes, some things will forever remain the same. Make sure that you hold on to those tried and tested traditions in your pursuit to become a “game-changer”.
